The weekend... again

As noted in previous entry, lost the Lyretail Swordtail Black & Orange Molly this week. We decided to not replace her at this time.

Earlier this week, in fact not too long after losing the Molly, found the tank filter clogged. I looked and we had run out of filters. Finally went to the store on this dreary, rainy afternoon and picked up a box of 6. So, replaced that.

Replaced 3 and two thirds gallons of water.

Note: These are the fish that are left.

1 Female Red Molly
1 Female Orange Creamsicle Lyretail Molly
1 Long-finned Gold Danio
1 Long-finned Zebra Danio
1 Neon Red Glofish Danio
1 Neon Green Glofish Danio
2 Female Gold Barbs
1 Silver-Blue Male Lyretail Swordtail
1 Chinese Algea Eater

Uncanny powers of deduction...

The Lyretail Swordtail Black & Orange Molly took its last breath about 40 or so minutes ago. I flushed it down the toilet 10-15 minutes later. We'll replace it this weekend.

Lose one, gain one

After closer inspection, we found that we'd lost the Zebra Danio a while ago. With that, we went and got a Long-finned Zebra Danio who seems to be doing fine in the tank for now.

Took 8 gallons of water out and removed everything to clean the rock strata. Put back a few plants, a couple grasses, the idol structure & put in the treasure chest.

Currently we're worried about the Lyretail Swordtail Black & Orange Molly. It has not consumed anything in a few days and recent has been seen hanging around the heater and the surface of the tank at the back.
We may be replacing another fish soon if this fish doesn't eat soon.

Fish can be beautiful and annoying at the same time.

Stopped by PetCo this afternoon for new fish. Picked up 3 new ones after finding the two from last Sunday and the latest Plecostmus floating around or under decorations.

Acquired a Silver-Blue Male Lyretail Swordtail, an Orange-Black Female Lyretail Swordtail and a Chinese Algae Eater.

Did an almost-complete water change of 6 gallons, replaced the tank filter, vacuumed the rock strata a good bit and scrapped off the algea from the sides of the tank. Also moved the decorations around.

WTF is up with the Plecostmus?

Came home tonight to find our latest Plecostmus, dead at the top of the tank, attached to the side. Tried tapping and even nudging it with a net to get a response. Dead as a doornail.

I have noticed that the algea has really started to creep up the sides to the top as of late. I don't know what to make of it as I am not home when the sun shines on the only window in the room where we keep the fish tank.

Come home from work and I find a note from GF™. Says that the Swordtail has Ick. I look in the tank and I find that the Silver Molly has died as well. What the fuck is going on that we're in the middle of a fucking epidemic.

Too tired right now. Will probably do water change Sunday.

Replace 2 & Lose 2 Again.

Found the Plecostmus frozen with all fins out at the bottom of the tank by the heater.

We fished it out and left for the pet store for a new Common Plecostmus. Came home and GF™ saw the Long-finned Leopard Danio floating around. It was dead. Weird thing was, it died while we were gone, not even an hour or so. So, after a quick water change, we left again to replace that fish. The Zebra Danio we replaced it with seems to be doing just fine so far.

Changed 6 gallons of water today after skipping last week due to being at the cabin.

While the water level was down, I did as best of a clean job as I could and rearranged the decorations around. Didn't have to, but since I needed to clean the rock strata, I figured, what the hell.

Changed out 3.33 gallons of water.

Used the vacuum and a baby sock to clean a little of the rock strata. Did so until water was too cloudy. Sock really dirty. Had them black in the past, though. To do a complete cleaning of rock, will need to remove decor and take water level down to about half. Will have to consider doing so soon..

Replaced water filter with our final one. Estimate August is when a new water filtration system will be needed. Or start ordering from Aquarium Pharmacueticals through their retailers.

Filter change good timing or need new tank water filter

Well, we got a new fish from a small pet shop where I thought they would have new filter for the Tap Water Filter we use to filter the water for the fish tank. They said they hadn't carried them in years. So, like I said, we got a new fish from them. A malen Platy which at PetCo would have been listed as a Blue Dalmation Platy. This guy just had his Platies all together in one tank, which, in essence, makes sense.

Guy said he could get a filter for me, but it'd take a week to get it in. I'll have to remember to talk to him about other ways to filter the fish water before putting it in. He mentioned a Reverse Osmosis system would be the best bang for the buck over the long term, but we don't have the room for that type of system.

Cured Sickness or Unlucky Molly

We had our latest acquisition, the Black male Molly, die on us this past Monday. Found it hidden behind the treasure chest, under the tank filter and tucked under a fake plant.

I swear, it's the 3rd or 4th one to die on us in a row. GF™ is insistant on a so-called even number of fish. I'd rather follow the hints and not bother as the worst the remaining fish have been was a small bout of ick this past weekend/week.

Speaking of, on Sunday GF™ insisted on putting a dose of Ick Clear in the tank as she saw a big white dot on the Creamsicle Molly and thought it was ick. Doing so required us to take out the tank filter due to it coming with carbon already inside it. I saw that it was close to being plugged, so I tossed that one and got a new one ready to go. After 48 hours or so, the fish in question looked fine and thus I put the new filter in, which would have been Wednesday, March 26th.
Will keep an eye on tank filter and replace as necessary, noting here when completed.

Just found the Black Molly dead behind the treasure chest. It had to have died overnight as none of the fish had started to eat it. It probably helped that it was in a hidden spot of sorts next to a plant and underneath the tank filter as well.

New fish or Balloon Mollies suck

Got a male Black Molly this morning to replace the Balloon Molly we lost last Saturday. We'll see how it goes.

Also learned that Swordtails are not Mollies but are their own species themselves, though they will crossbreed with Platies.

We definitely are never getting Ballon Mollies again as it seems they can't handle stress or something. The two or three we've ever had have died on us not too long after we brought them home. And thus, they suck.

With this, it seems we now have three Danios, three Platies, two Mollies, a Swordtail and a Plecostmus. Two more Danios and we'll have a Fibonacci tank.

Just found this one upside down not moving with a couple brown spots on the body next to a fake plant. It was dead. I used the net, grabbed it and once I determined it was dead, I flushed it down the toilet. Had it been just seriously sick, I would have frozen it to put it out of its misery.

D-I-R-T-Y or Algea, algea everywhere

As previously noted, we picked up a female Silver Ballon Molly from the store after freezing the previous male Silver Molly.

This brings the ratio of female Mollies & Platies to male ones down to 5:1. Hope he's happy.

Also, I have noticed that the Balloon Molly has become less balloon-like in the past few days. Could it be something that happens while in the store or is it just how she looks through the glass on the tank.

New Fish, Cleaning tank and new tank filter!

We went to the store and got another fish to replace the one that died today. Picked up a few new plant decorations, a couple that glow in the dark.

The new fish is a female Gold Twinbar Platy.

We had a bit of a shock when we finished cleaning the rock strata of the tank and filled the tank. Went to go plug the tank filter back in and it didn't work. Nothing happened. Added water, tried the wall socket. Nothing. So, we made an emergency run to Wal-Mart to pick up a new tank filter. Fortunately, they had tank filters in the fish section of the Pet Supplies. Would never get fish from them, however. Their tanks have no decoration for the fish to use or interact with. Not even rock strata. They had a few dead fish in their tanks, but that almost seems normal. Not even much of a selection, though.

So, we grabbed an Aqua-Tech 5-15 Power Filter and rushed home to get it set up. Or else it would have been until after 9am this morning before we would have had a new tank filter set up.

We'll stop by the pet store today and pick up a new tank filter like our old one and swap when we get home. The one from Wal-Mart just bought us some time.

We also tossed our old gallon jugs and picked up 9 new ones. Will be operating on a system of 3 gallons each week. Every 4th week, will do a cleaning of the tank. Tank filter will just be replaced when it's needed.

Hi-Fin Red Wag Platy 2007-2008

Just found the remains of the Hi-Fin Red Wag Platy on the bottom of the tank. Color was gone and looked like the the rest of the fish had started to really nip at it, as they tend to do with dead things.

In a way, it isn't surprising that it's dead. It's been hiding in one spot in the tank for quite a while. Don't know why, though. We did look for it, but we never did scare it out of its hiding spot, assuming it was napping or something.

Damn.
