Dilemma Updated & solved

GFâ„¢ "hinted" that I should take the Celestica position and so I did, mainly to avoid arguing with her.

Been there a week in what's called Packout where I prepare all the boards they send out for Shipping. Working on 2nd shift as well, 3:30pm to 1:30am.

This coming Monday I'm going in for a Soldering class. I took the test a week ago this past Friday and soldered everthing but a large, square, many pinned chip which I was only able to tack down before time ran out. Officially I guess I failed, but given that I haven't touched a soldering iron since last July, I say I did pretty darn good.
The class will be during the day, 7am to 3pm, and I have the option to work late if I so wish. Would be overtime, of course. I'll have to think about it.

Dilemma

Well, I've essentially been offered the choice between two jobs. Both of which are low paying, but they are jobs. One is working as a Service Technician for Rove Pest Control. The other is as an Electronic Assembler for Celestica through Addecco. This one has a possibility of becoming a Soldering position with more money.

Interviews *crosses fingers*

Well, last Thursday I interviewed for a position at a really small company up in Lindstrom. I sent a thank you letter after I got home.

No response yet, but I shouldn't be surprised as the position is calling for knowing C or C++ computer programming.

Just got home from an interview for a company up in Rogers. I sent a thank you note as soon as I got home as well. I am to hear back by next Wednesday if I have moved on to the next stage in the process.

Hope I do.

Curious

A site I go to for job searching shows a number between starting the search and showing the results. These are the number of jobs available. I've been noticing this number trending downward as of late. To keep concrete evidence, I will start tracking this number each day.

For today the number is: 1,182,290

Job search Day 12: Interviews and a mini-vacation

Haven't been doing all that much in regards to job search this week. Neighbor blaring stereo into wall makes me want to destroy his equipment or kill him moreso than look for a job. Been on a few interviews, so didn't have much in the way of desire before or after to really apply for other positions.

Job search Day 8: 25 jobs applied to. Or adventures with auto-apply.

Date: 2/18/08
Position: Instrument Repair Technician
Company/Temp Agency: ITC Medical
City: Roseville
Source: Dunwoody Career Services

Got a response from a Diane Norton last Friday afternoon about the job I put above. She wanted a more thorough explanation of my job history and where I found out about the job. Thing is, I mention where I find the job in the first sentence in the first paragraph in my cover letter. Always do.

Tried a site's auto-apply feature. Good and bad things about it. Good thing is that I applied to quite a lot of positions in just one day. Bad thing is, most of the positions that were applied to, I didn't qualify for or never would apply to in the first place. So, I stopped the auto-apply feature. Means I'll have to do the work myself now, but at least I'll know what I'm applying for.

Since last Wednesday I've applied to 25 positions, which are listed below in chronological order.

Like last time, jobs applied to listed below the jump.

Back at it again.... unfortunately

Time to start looking for yet another job. I swear it sometimes makes me so frustrated that it makes me want to go on a rampage.

*groan*

Trying a new thing this time. Am keeping track of all jobs applied to in an Excel Database. It's a little neater than before plus I can keep track of when I apply and how long it's been before a response.

If I apply to at least 5 jobs per day, I'll be happy. Going to do as many as I feel comfortable with each weekday.

Jobs applied to this morning listed below the jump.

Friday, January 18th, 2008

I haven't heard from Wand Corporation yet.

Applied to three jobs today.

Resource MFG got me a job down in Bloomington starting Monday. 2nd shift, 12.45/hr, 4 days a week. They also want a copy of my birth certificate to prove I was born here in America.
Don't know if I want it.

Yesterday, I interviewed with a temp agency and the actual company. Turns out they were sister companies. So, I interviewed with the president of the company and a few others. Even though it's way down in Savage, I'd rather get this position as it's with a company that is poised to grow exponentially over the next year and beyond. I sent in a thank you letter to the president of the company as he did give me his business card.
I'll try calling my contact at the temp agency to see what's going on in a couple hours. Will update blow the jump if anything is known.

Wand Corporation Job testing & interview

Went for testing at Wand Corporation for what turned out to be a Help Desk Technician position for them. Passed both tests and scored perfect in the areas I knew I was going to and utterly failed those that I didn't have experience in.

One of the questions was if the customer was rude to me, what I would do and I had to choose amoung 4 choices. I chose the one where I would hang up on them if they were rude. Turns out I would have been fired for that.

I had an interview with the manager/supervisor of the Help Desk and he explained everything and when I brought up the question, he said that while they didn't have a policy about that situation, they do try everything within their power to make the customer happy. He also said that while I didn't have the necessary skills for the position, he has gone to bat for others he felt would be worth being trained in for the position.
Reason why I would have been fired is had that customer been with their biggest account($10 billion!!!), it would have worked its way up the chain of command and eventually back and I would have been in big trouble for hanging up on a customer.
Guy I interviewed with said they have a lot of overtime and minimum hours for each week are about 45 hours and mandatory every other Saturday working with a day off during the week. I don't know about the overtime as I'm afraid GFâ„¢ will moan and groan a bit plus she may moan about the Saturdays as well.
In my opinion, the add was a bit misleaded for the job. The title on it was Computer Technician, not Help Desk Technician.
I'll actually receive a reponse on this one whether they will hire me on or not. Given the way the guy that interviewed me talked, I'm hoping he doesn't stick his neck out for me. I'd rather he didn't and then I disappoint him, ya know?

Another Monday, more jobs applied to

Only reason to hate today is the bone-chilling cold outside. Tis only 5°F outside. Although, it makes me glad I didn't have to get up and be outside at 6am in this.

Just 8 today. Hope Dunwoody sends some out today so I can count those with these.

Not as many as I wanted...

...but they are still jobs nonetheless.
Only found 6 jobs today. Don't know if that's a message or not.

Wand Corporation called late yesterday. The ones with the Computer Technician position available from last Thursday. I am going in this coming Tuesday for testing at 2:30pm. Maybe an interview, but the lady said it was unlikely. Well, I'll do my best on whatever they throw at me. This is certainly more than what I expected from them.

I still don't think I'm going to get the position, but I'm gonna do my best.

Updates:
.....-From yesterday, the Production Electrical Technician has been filled by someone else. Thing is, though, I got the e-mail from the company in question, not from the temp aganecy I submitted through. A little weird, IMO.

Job Search Monday, 2:09AM 1/7/08

Applied to 8 jobs, updated resume on a couple job sites and a follow up to a job previously applied to.

Last Thursday I applied to a Computer Technician position with Wand Corporation. They sent a response on Friday with a written interview attached. Had to pay $150 to get the key for Microsoft Office, so hopefully they do bring me on so I can recoup the cost from them. Doubt they will though. Filled out the interview as best as I could. Missed two questions pertaining to good experiences in customer service and installing software and networks.

I'll be surprised if I get a call at all.

Also, Mechanical Assembler position from last Thursday through Aerotek has been filled.

Jobs below the jump.
